The French Navy (Marine Nationale) has officially entered a new era of logistical and training efficiency. In a landmark move for European defense, the Navy has become the first military operator on the continent to deploy the Pilatus PC-24 Super Versatile Jet, marking a significant upgrade to its naval aviation capabilities.
Following a strategic lease agreement finalized in late 2025, the first of three aircraft was officially received at Landivisiau Naval Air Base on March 17, 2026.
A “Swiss Army Knife” for the Skies
The selection of the PC-24 was driven by its unique “Super Versatile” architecture. Unlike traditional business jets, the PC-24 was designed from the ground up to handle rugged environments, making it a natural fit for military applications.
- Rough-Field Capability: The PC-24 is the only business jet certified to operate from unpaved and short runways, allowing the French Navy to reach remote outposts that were previously inaccessible to jet aircraft.
- The Cargo Advantage: Equipped with a massive standard cargo door, the aircraft can be rapidly reconfigured from a passenger shuttle to a high-priority freight carrier.
- Single-Pilot Certification: Optimized for efficiency, the PC-24’s advanced cockpit allows for single-pilot operations, reducing manning requirements for non-combat missions.
Mission Profile: Training and Logistics
The PC-24 fleet, operated by Escadrille 57S, is designated to replace the aging Falcon 10 Mer, which has served the Navy since 1975. The new jets will fulfill three primary roles:
- IFR Advanced Training: Acting as a lead-in trainer for Rafale Marine pilots, helping them master Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) and European airspace procedures after returning from initial training in the U.S.
- Liaison & VIP Transport: Providing rapid transport for high-ranking officials and specialized personnel between naval bases.
- Urgent Medical & Cargo Evacuation: Utilizing its cargo door and rough-strip capability for time-sensitive missions where every minute counts.

Strategic Partnership with Jet Aviation
The integration of these Swiss-made jets is managed through a ten-year performance-based lease with Jet Aviation France. This “dry lease” model allows the French Navy to focus on flight operations while Jet Aviation handles the heavy lifting:
- Continuous Readiness: On-site line and base maintenance at Landivisiau.
- CrystalCare Support: Direct backing from Pilatus to ensure maximum airframe availability.
- Fleet Modernization: By outsourcing the sustainment of its transport fleet, the Navy can redirect more of its internal maintenance resources toward frontline combat assets like the Rafale.
Looking Ahead
The remaining two PC-24 aircraft are scheduled for delivery throughout 2026, with the full transition from the Falcon 10 Mer expected to be complete by 2027. As the French Navy pioneers this model, other European defense forces are closely watching the PC-24’s ability to bridge the gap between high-performance business aviation and rugged military necessity.
